FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — A new chapter in international collaboration began on June 23, 2025, as Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis formally signed a Sister City Agreement with Mayor Jerry Treñas of Iloilo City, Philippines. This historic alliance marks Iloilo as Fort Lauderdale’s first official Sister City in Southeast Asia.

Often called “the Heart of the Philippines,” Iloilo is one of the country’s most rapidly developing cities, known for its blend of heritage architecture, modern infrastructure, and commitment to sustainable growth. With its thriving waterfront and strong cultural identity, Iloilo shares many values with Fort Lauderdale, making the connection both timely and meaningful.

“This is more than a ceremonial agreement,” Mayor Trantalis said during the signing event. “It’s an invitation for our communities to learn from one another, grow together, and explore opportunities that go beyond borders.”

The partnership is set to pave the way for dynamic exchanges in education, tourism, workforce development, and climate resilience. Local schools and universities may soon take part in student exchange programs, while both cities are expected to collaborate on eco-friendly urban planning and cultural initiatives that celebrate shared histories and diverse traditions.

Mayor Treñas, attending virtually from Iloilo, emphasized the importance of building people-to-people connections. “This agreement opens a gateway for friendship, trade, and knowledge-sharing between our cities,” he noted.

Community leaders and representatives from both sides have expressed excitement over the potential impact on local businesses and youth engagement, particularly in global learning, arts, and sustainability practices.

The Sister Cities initiative, part of a broader effort to foster international cooperation at the municipal level, underscores Fort Lauderdale’s growing role as a global city — one that values diversity, innovation, and forward-thinking partnerships.

As this new relationship unfolds, residents can look forward to cultural festivals, business forums, and environmental collaborations that bring the spirit of Iloilo closer to home.

“This is a win for both cities,” said Trantalis. “Together, we’re shaping a future that’s more connected, more inclusive, and more inspired.”
