South Florida Observes AAPI Heritage Month with Public Events

By Asiana Post

Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month was observed across South Florida with events organized in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. Community groups, local officials, and advisory boards coordinated efforts throughout May to recognize the contributions of AAPI residents in the region.

The Miami-Dade Asian American Advisory Board played a key role in organizing several of these events. Board member Joshua Ho worked with county departments and community organizations to manage logistics, coordinate participants, and assist with outreach. His involvement ensured that scheduled programs were executed as planned.

The office of Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava supported the month’s observance, providing visibility and access to public spaces where events were held. Several County and city such as Newly asian American Commissioner North Miami Beach Group 7 Lyn Su, and Vice mayor of Miramar Yvette Colbourne programs took place at local libraries, government buildings, and open-air community sites.

One notable guest during the month’s activities was Honorary Philippine Consul General of Florida, Sharol Nobeljas, who traveled from Jacksonville to attend an event in Miami-Dade County. Her presence underscored efforts to connect AAPI communities across different parts of Florida and support regional engagement.

Activities included cultural presentations, small business vendor fairs, and information tables led by local organizations. Some events focused on civic education and public service access, while others highlighted arts and heritage from AAPI backgrounds.

Several local vendors participated in community fairs, offering food, crafts, and informational materials. When asked about the month’s relevance, many expressed support for the opportunity to engage directly with the public and share aspects of their heritage through business and conversation.

No single closing event was held, but the overall participation throughout the month was consistent, with multiple neighborhoods and institutions taking part. AAPI Heritage Month is recognized nationally each May. In South Florida, it continues to grow as a collaborative initiative among government offices, cultural leaders, and local residents.
